*Symptoms usually begin four to eight weeks after conception, peak at about 9-11 weeks, and go away by 14-16 weeks into the pregnancy.
*Ayurveda has described nausea, vomiting and other symptoms of normal pregnancy.
*Causes of nausea, vomiting according to Ayurveda:
1) Vitiated vata - Vayus vitiated due to stimulation by the fetus . The vitiated Vayu causes Vomiting in pregnancy मा.नि.15/3मधु.व्या.
2) Non fulfilment of desires of pregnant woman:
Normally the pregnant woman desires the substances which are deficient in her body. Non Fulfillment of desires may cause vomiting. सु.सं.उ.49/12 डल्ह.टी.,
3) The first three months the fetus is in Amawastha . (आमावस्था)
च.सं.शा.8/25 अ.हृ.शा.4/8
In the first trimester it is Ama awastha of fetus( Garbha). Therefore she suffers from Ama symptoms such as nausea, vomiting.
*According to modern science exact cause of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy is not clear
Following may be probable causes of vomiting in normal pregnancy
1) Rapid changes in hormone levels. These fluctuations may cause changes in the muscle contraction and relaxation patterns of stomach and intestines, thus leading to nausea and vomiting.
The hormones include human chorionic gonadotropin(hCG), estrogen, and progesterone,thyroid , etc.
2)Psychological :
condition may be a woman's psychological reaction against the pregnancy and might arise from conflict within the family and her home environment.
*Hyperemesis gravidarum: This condition occurs when a pregnant woman has ongoing vomiting that results in weight loss of more than 5% of her body weight, and evidence of dehydration.
** This is not the symptom of normal pregnancy
Hyperemesis gravidarum is an extreme form of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy that sometimes requires hospitalization.
If nausea, vomiting does not reduce or if she is unable to take any liquids for more than 24 hours then there is a need to search for any other associated cause.
If the vomiting is associated with these symptoms
* Fever
* Abdominal pain
* Headache
* Dizziness
* Fainting
* Weakness
* Fatigue
* Fever
* Diarrhea
* Abdominal pain
In these conditions patients need urgent help.
Treatment:-
Principle of treatment
The principles of treatment are the same, as general vomiting.
Panchkarm should be avoided
Medicines should be soft,sweet,cool in nature should be given
Should full feeling her with desirable fruits,food,and satisfy (डोहाळे पुरवावे )
Oral Medicines:-
Mix Paste of Bhunimba with equal quantity of sugar ref Harit samhita trutiya sthana51/06
Drink decoction of Shunthi and Bilva fruit by mixing barley flour in it
Yog Ratnakar stri roga chikitsa
Drink pasted Dhanyaka with rice water and sugar
Yog Ratnakar stri roga chikitsa
Drink Parched rice (लाह्या)
water mixed with pulp of ripe Bilva fruit
Yog Ratnakar stri roga chikitsa
In Vata predominant -
Make Salt free soup from goat meat by adding sour pomegranate use it in regular diet
In Pitta predominant
-Drink parched rice water mixed with honey and sugar
-Drink Sugar mixed Meat soup of wild animals or birds
In Kapha predominant
-Drink cooled decoction of tender leaves of mango and black plum mixed with honey
- soup of green gram mixed with pomegranate, Salt and Ghrita should be added in the diet
