IMPORTANCE OF PROPER SLEEP:-
देहवृत्तौ यथाऽऽहारस्तथा स्वप्न: सुखो मत: l स्वप्नाहारसमुत्थे च स्थौल्यकार्श्ये विशेषतः ll51ll च.सू21
Like proper diet, proper sleep is needed for the balance state of the body. Obesity and emaciation are specially occurs due to proper or improper sleep and diet. 

Causes of insomnia
1) Panchakarma therapies, blood letting
2) Fear, anxiety, anger, , physical exercise,
3) fasting, 
4) uncomfortable bed,
5)  predominance of Satva and suppression of Tamas
6) Busy in interesting work  
7) old age,
8)  diseases, specially these due to the vitiation of Vata like colic pain, 
9)  Some of having less sleep by nature

Treatment to  induce sound sleep:

1)अभ्यंग Massage
 2)उत्सादन – body massage with dry medicated powder
3)स्नान -Bath
4) Food  -soup of domestic marshy and aquatic animals
  with curd, milk, ghreeta and alcohol
5) मानस् Psycological:- food, smell and sound which gives psychic pleasure,
7)संवाहन -rubbing the body by hand, 
8) नेत्रतर्पण- application of soothing ointment to the eyes, 
9)शिरो मुख लेप – Application of ointment on head and  face .
10) विस्तीर्ण शयनं ,वेश्म सुखं-big and   comfortable bed and home 
11) कालस्तथोचित: - proper  time to sleep for that person
